PARASITE

Parasite takes shape from the topographical observation of the quarries of Carrara, where the wounds left by aggressive marble extraction are arranged in patterns that evoke, with surprising similarity, the tunnels dug under the bark by the bark beetle (Ips typographus). This small beetle is a parasite that colonizes the space between the sapwood and the bark of the tree, leading to its progressive and inevitable decay. The work intercepts a profound connection in this analogy: Parasite thus occupies a liminal space, where anthropic and entomological intervention reflect each other, revealing a common tension to shape, engrave, and appropriate matter. The composition reveals a further dualism, intrinsic to natural harmony, which produces a bifocal aesthetic—on the one hand, the sinuous motion of the quarrying, which follows the veins of the marble with organic curves; on the other, the rigid rationality of the regular cartographic division designed by man, which imposes grids, segmentations, and coordinates. The work becomes not only a testimony to the vulnerability of the landscape, but also a question about our position towards nature, about the fine line that separates the act of exploration from that of erosion. Parasite offers no answers, but invites us to recognize the persistence of these twin forces — human and non-human — that continue to write their silent stories on the surface of the world.
