Gea

March 2020

Gea is one of his first academic works in marble, presented as his final project for his bachelor's degree. The work, made from prized white statuary marble from the Michelangelo quarries supplied by the Barattini workshop, is clearly based on a surrealist interpretation of the primordial titan from Greek mythology.
The figure, carved directly from stone without the aid of sketches, represents Mother Nature in all her strength and power, crystallised in the act of emerging from the Earth. The woman's hands are transformed into roots. These embody the unbreakable bond with the planet, symbolised by the circular base below, the source from which Gaia draws her strength, projecting herself upwards. The contrast between the slender pose and the massive physical structure makes the figure robust, which, without detracting from the delicate and sinuous lines of the movement, conveys the image of the power of a tree in full growth.
